Support the Equality Act—Contact your senators today!

In May, the U.S. House of Representatives passed a historic piece of legislation that would finally prohibit discrimination based on an individual’s sexual orientation or gender identity in schools, at work, and in the context of housing, credit, and jury service.

The Equality Act (H.R. 5 and S. 788) has made it through one chamber of Congress, but now it's up to the senate to act. Your senators need to hear from influential constituents and school leaders like you today to sway their decision. Your voice matters, and there has never been a more important time to stand up for LGBTQ students, educators, and school staff to ensure that they are afforded the same rights and protections as all Americans.

Dear Senator,

I am one of your constituents and a leader in my school. As an educator in our community, I am writing to you today to urge you to support the Equality Act, S. 788.

As a school leader, I know that a principal’s primary responsibility is to create and sustain a school environment in which each student, regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity, is known, accepted, valued, trusted, and encouraged to be an active and responsible member of the school community. I also believe that it is incumbent on school leaders to ensure that teachers and school staff are treated with the respect and dignity they deserve and are not discriminated against based on sexual orientation, gender identity, race, religion, disability, or any other part of their person.

While we would like to hope that everyone holds those beliefs, sadly, we know that is not always the case. That is why we need to pass the Equality Act to ensure that under the law, everyone is protected against discrimination at school, at work, when seeking housing, or anywhere else. LGBTQ Americans deserve the same rights and privileges as all citizens, and the Equality Act would ensure that those rights are afforded to them. The Civil Rights Act of 1964 has solidified these same protections into law based on race, and in 2019, it’s long past time that Congress extends those protections for sex, sexual orientation, and gender identity.

Please join the educators and school leaders in your district in standing up against discrimination by urging Majority Leader McConnell to bring S. 788 to the senate floor for a vote. H.R. 5, the House’s version of the Equality Act, has already passed. We are counting on your support now that it’s the senate’s turn to act.
