Dear Representative,

As a nurse advocate, member of the American Nurses Association, and your constituent, I urge you to support H.R. 6, the SUPPORT for Patients and Communities Act, introduced by Chairmen Walden and Brady, and Ranking Members Pallone and Neal, which will better empower nurses to respond to the opioid crisis.

This bill, specifically Section 303, would give nurse practitioner and physician assistant authorization to prescribe life-saving opioid treatment permanently and extend access to treatment by allowing clinical nurse specialists, certified registered nurse anesthetists, and certified nurse-midwives to prescribe MAT through October 2023. This section is very similar to H.R. 3692, which has been championed by Representatives Tonko and Lujan. In addition, the Secretary of Health and Human Services and the Drug Enforcement Agency would be able to study the care provided by these practitioners and physicians.

This important step will improve access to life-saving opioid substance use disorder treatment and help those suffering -- and their communities -- recover.
