Petition to Restore and Conserve Six Lakes/Olin Powder Farm
as an Act of Restorative Justice for Southern Hamden and a Park for the Benefit of All
We represent the many organizations and faith groups that make up the Six Lakes Park Coalition, along with local residents and concerned citizens. We ask you to support the Six Lakes Park Coalition’s efforts to promote environmental justice and establish a public park on the current site of the Olin Powder Farm, and to hold Olin Corporation accountable for its cleanup.
For 37 years, Olin Corporation—the owner of the property—has been under a consent order with the Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection (DEEP) to clean up Six Lakes/Olin Powder Farm in Hamden, Connecticut. So far, only minimal cleanup has occurred. Six Lakes offers a unique opportunity for much-needed open space in southern Hamden—the last property in the neighborhood with that potential—and a chance for restorative justice for the neighboring Newhall community, itself the victim of Olin’s past pollution and a long, disruptive remediation process.
Help us promote access to clean, green spaces for our community, particularly in predominantly Black, working-class neighborhoods like Newhall. DEEP must hold Olin accountable for full and expeditious remediation of industrial pollution at Six Lakes with the aim of creating a public park there.
