Include review of net metering policy as part of JEA investigation
Dear Council Members,
I’m writing as a JEA customer to urge you to restore solar net metering. Net metering is a fair system that ensures solar owners receive credit for the electricity their systems generate. Restoring net metering is a step you can take to help restore public trust in JEA. As you know, JEA ended this policy in 2018. This was done before the effort to sell the utility became public knowledge. It is clear the decision to end net metering was made to make JEA more attractive to a buyer, as revealed in the report released by the Special Investigatory Committee on JEA Matters. Simply put, net metering was cut to push the narrative that JEA was in a financial crisis. Restoring net metering won’t just benefit solar owners. Rooftop solar lowers everyone’s electricity bills. It does so by providing more electricity to the grid when demand is highest. This reduces the need for utilities to buy additional expensive “peak” electricity from power plants. Rooftop solar is also generated close to where it is needed. This means we don’t need as much infrastructure, such as electricity poles and transformers, to keep the electric grid running well. Thorough analysis shows that net metering is a net benefit: https://www.brookings.edu/research/rooftop-solar-net-metering-is-a-net-benefit/ JEA exists to serve Jacksonville residents, not shareholders. With this in mind, I hope you will move quickly to restore a fair net metering policy. Doing so will benefit all JEA customers. Thank you for reading my letter.
