The New Mexico State Senate has introduced a bill that would prohibit any new charter schools from opening in some parts of New Mexico.
SB 422 will effectively prohibit new charter schools in Albuquerque, Santa Fe, and Taos. The bill states that you cannot open a charter school in any district where the current enrollment of charter school students is 10% or more of the school district's population.
82% of New Mexico residents say parents should have more public school options in their community, not fewer, according to a recent poll conducted by Research & Polling.

This bill fails to acknowledge the incredible charter schools in New Mexico that work hard everyday to provide the best education for our students. We saw many of these schools rise to meet the moment during COVID to provide options to students and families while many districts kept their doors closed. We should not limit options for families out of deference to the local school district.
