Close to 1 percent of eligible voters vote in school board elections! Once elected, Delaware's local volunteer school board members are given five-year terms.
This term length is longer than other elected positions (Delaware state representatives get 2-year terms and state senators get 4-year terms) and makes it hard to ensure school board members are accountable to the constituencies they serve.
HB 134 introduced by Representative Paul Baumbach shortens the term length from five years to three years. This change will increase the frequency in which voters decide who will run our schools.
