Support Yellow Springs residents’ solar rights
I am writing to express my concern about the potential to make it much more expensive for Yellow Springs residents and small businesses to install rooftop solar systems on their properties. In 2013, the Council passed an ordinance that granted the Village the ability to limit the amount of power generated by rooftop solar to not more than 1% of the Village's annual energy use. Since then, more Yellow Springs homeowners and small businesses have installed solar systems, and we have now reached the 1% cap. If the Council decides to enforce this arbitrary limit, Yellow Spring residents who want to go solar would not receive net metering credits for the excess clean solar power they contribute to the electric grid. This would be unfair and would substantially drive up the costs of going solar. I hope that you will support expanded solar use in our Village by taking no action on the 1% cap (or consider increasing or eliminating it altogether). There is no justification for the myth that solar homeowners are being “subsidized” by non-solar users. Multiple studies have concluded that rooftop solar benefits all residents by reducing dirty energy use and associated pollution, by lowering transmission costs, and by sending affordable power to the grid during times of peak energy use when electricity is most expensive. My neighbors and I are counting on you to support, not discourage, local solar investment and clean energy businesses. Thank you for supporting Yellow Springs residents’ solar rights.
