As part of the Net Energy Metering (NEM) proceeding, the California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC) recently released a proposal on the future of solar for renters at multifamily properties. Unfortunately, the proposed decision would put onsite solar further out of reach for renters and tenants, and we want to ask for your help to extend solar benefits to some of the Californians that need it the most.
Through an innovative billing system called Virtual Net Energy Metering (VNEM), renters in California can take part in the clean energy by running their apartments on solar energy and benefiting from clean battery backup power. More than 40% of residents in our state rent, and we believe it is critical to preserve pathways for renters to participate in our clean energy transition to help control their monthly costs. The CPUC was lobbied by large investor-owned utilities to slash solar credits for renters and multifamily properties, and their initial proposal does just that. This proposal is not final, but we only have a few short weeks to push back.
Please join us in asking the CPUC to preserve this critical solar program so that California renters can have the same opportunities to benefit from clean energy as homeowners do. We only have until October 12 to impact this decision, so we urge you to join us and send a message today.
Please use the fields on the right to fill out your information and send your message. Thank you for speaking up for California renters and please stay involved!
