Be A Voice For Civility And Religious Tolerance During Political Convention Season

This week and next, our attention will be focused on the Republican and Democratic conventions in Cleveland, OH and Philadelphia, PA. Our two main political parties will select their respective presidential nominees, adopt party principles and platforms, and set rules for the party's activities.

Leading up to these conventions, there has been an alarming amount of discriminatory rhetoric by politicians focused on the Muslim population, particularly targeting Syrian refugees. At a time when much attention will be given to national security and political posturing, it is important that such rhetoric reflects the values of religious freedom and mutual respect that are foundational for our nation.

Last week, Shoulder-to-Shoulder campaign delivered copies of a Religious Freedom Pledge to all our elected officials in Washington D.C. This pledge was endorsed by more than 100 faith leaders, including UCC General Minister and President, Rev. John Dorhauer. The Religious Freedom Pledge calls on policy makers to reject all aspects of bigotry, discrimination, harassment, and violence based on religion or belief.

As our political parties meet in the coming days, let us raise our voices in rejection of bigotry and any efforts to discriminate against those fleeing violence based on religion.

Add your name in support of the Religious Freedom Pledge:

I pledge and commit to the American people that I will uphold and defend the freedom of conscience and religion of all individuals by rejecting and speaking out, without reservation, against bigotry, discrimination, harassment, and violence based on religion or belief.
