Tell the DOJ: We Will Not Rest with an Arrest…We Demand Justice for Ahmaud!

On February 23, 2020, Ahmaud Arbery, an unarmed black man, was killed by Gregory and Travis McMichael, two white men attempting to execute a “citizen’s arrest” on suspicion of Mr. Arbery’s involvement in a trespassing incident. At the time of Mr. Arbery’s death and up until May 7, 2020, no arrests had been made in the case.

ENOUGH IS ENOUGH! The lethal use of force against African Americans on “suspicion” of any crime MUST END! Because the state of Georgia is one of four U.S. states without a hate crimes statute, we are calling on U.S. Attorney General William Barr and the career officials of the Civil Rights Division of the U.S. Department of Justice to move swiftly to investigate this unnecessary killing as a hate crime under the Matthew Shepard and James Byrd, Jr. Hate Crimes Prevention Act.

We specifically request the U.S. Department of Justice take the following immediate actions:

  1. Open an independent civil rights investigation into whether Gregory McMichael, Travis McMichael, or others violated federal laws, including the Matthew Shepard and James Byrd, Jr. Hate Crimes Prevention Act.
  2. Open an independent investigation into whether there has been a pattern of constitutional violations by the Glynn County District Attorney’s Office.
  3. Open an independent investigation into whether there has been a pattern of constitutional violations by the Glynn County Police Department.
