Don't block my right to go solar
I am writing to urge you to allow street-visible solar installations in our city. In recent months, the city’s Architectural Board has denied multiple applications to install solar panels on the street-facing side of homes, even if it is southerly — the most efficient location to maximize clean solar power. Not allowing south, street- facing rooftop solar systems discourages residents and businesses from going solar. The inability to maximize the production of an array also affects a homeowner’s ability to properly size a battery back-up system to provide a home power in the event of a grid outage. Forcing homeowners to relocate street facing arrays drives up homeowner and installer costs. It makes the solar system less efficient. And, it undermines the City’s sustainability, resiliency, and clean energy goals. Florida has a state solar access law to ensure that municipalities and homeowner associations do not infringe on our right to go solar on our property. Coral Gables should uphold these rights. Please allow street-visible solar installations in our city.
