Tell George Washington University to end the legacy preference!
Currently, the admissions office at The George Washington University (GW) offers an advantage to applicants based on their familial ties to alumni. This is known as a legacy preference (or legacy admissions).
In 2011, children of GW alumni were found to be 1.5 times more likely to be accepted than applicants who did not have a parent who attended the University. The legacy preference mostly benefits white students and/or students from affluent backgrounds, undermining GW’s efforts to make the campus more socioeconomically and racially diverse.
More than 100 universities nationwide have eliminated the legacy preference in their admissions process. GWU must eliminate this unfair practice and open more seats to first-generation college students and students of color from Washington, D.C!
