Dear Official,

As a member of the American Nurses Association (ANA) and your constituent, I'm writing to urge you to support H.R. 3692, the Addiction Treatment Access Improvement Act of 2017 sponsored by Reps. Lujan and Tonko.

Nurses know firsthand the importance of patients having access to medication-assisted treatment (MAT) for opioid use disorder, particularly among vulnerable populations such as pregnant women and postpartum mothers struggling with addiction. Over the past year, lawmakers have sought to address the crisis comprehensively by advancing bills that would expand access to the overdose antidote naloxone, reduce the prevalence of unused pain pills, expand prevention education, and increase collaboration with law enforcement and local criminal justice systems.

ANA has successfully made the case for a much-needed expansion of medication-assisted treatment services. In both the House and Senate, legislation is poised to expand access treatment by allowing Nurse Practitioners to prescribe buprenorphine in accordance with state law.

This legislation builds on steps taken under the previous Comprehensive Addiction and Recovery Act to enable clinical nurse specialists, certified nurse midwives, and certified registered nurse anesthetists to prescribe buprenorphine. These advanced practice-nursing professionals have similar educational and training requirements as other currently eligible providers and often serve as primary care providers for vulnerable populations.

Please support H.R. 3692 and pass this common sense solution to help continue to battle the opioid epidemic in the United States. Thank you for your time and attention.
