Call on your State and Federal Lawmakers to Protect Kids!

Dear State and Federal Lawmakers Representing Washington:

Do not divide our children by accepting or promoting any policies that undermine civil and human rights.

Support budgets and policies that not only protect kids, but also strengthen, value, and support their families.

Stand on the values America boldly claims and must still fully realize: equality, freedom, opportunity for all.

If you do, I, and many other Washingtonians will stand with you.

Read the full message to your lawmakers below and add your name.

1.6 million Washington State children are growing up right now; playing, learning, overcoming challenges, and discovering their own gifts and talents.

There are no more urgent and important responsibilities before you than protecting and supporting all Washington State’s beloved children right now, and building a Washington State where future generations can thrive.

Do not divide our children by accepting or promoting any policies that undermine human rights.

A child’s value is not determined by the color of his skin, her religious faith, where she was born, his gender identity or sexual orientation, her immigration status, or the makeup of their family. A child’s civil rights and opportunities should not be either. We reject words and ideas that imagine a false reality where some of our children have greater value, worth, or potential than others. We ask you to do the same.

Support budgets and policies that not only protect kids, but also strengthen, value, and support their families.

Children live in families. They cannot raise themselves. Washington parents and caregivers work hard. All work has value. But hard work cannot always shield families from hard times. Too often the wages corporations pay don’t match the costs of raising a family. Sometimes families falter. If you are living paycheck to paycheck – like so many Washingtonians, an illness or accident, a layoff, a rent increase, or a family emergency can put kids at risk. Public policy can and should work for ALL families.

We are calling on Washington’s elected leaders in the state and federal government to:

  • Protect existing public investments that families count on as they raise children, and advance policies and budgets that boldly invest in our children including health coverage, early learning, food and nutrition programs, and our schools.
  •  Protect civil and human rights including the freedom of children and their families to worship, express their religion and culture, the right to speak freely and protest, and to live free from discrimination and acts of bias at home, school, work, and in public. Immigration policy should hold families together, not break children’s hearts by separating them from their families or forcing them to leave the country they call home.

Before you make decisions on policies brought before you, please ask yourself these questions:

  • Will this policy help children thrive today, and create a future that works for future generations?
  •  Will this policy actively promote equity and opportunity, and protect the civil and human rights of children and their families?

I am asking you to stand on the values America boldly claims and must still fully realize: equality, freedom, opportunity for all.

If you do, I, and many other Washingtonians will stand with you.
