Every year, roughly 42,000 people die in the U.S. from preventable diseases caused by exposure to secondhand smoke. Workers in the hospitality & service industries such as bartenders and wait staff are significantly more at risk.
With every breath in a restaurant or bar that allows smoking, workers are exposed to 7,000 chemicals that cause heart disease, lung cancer, and other serious illnesses. Non-smoking employees smoke the equivalent of up to 36 cigarettes over the course of an 8-hour work shift.
The good news is we can protect all workers and familes from dangerous secondhand smoke exposure and improve the public health of our community by passing compressive a 100% smoke-free ordinance in our city.
