Cuts to health care subsidies? We say no!

The legislative battles around health care seem to be getting uglier and uglier. Recently the President used his executive authority to scrap subsidies to health insurance companies that help pay out-of-pocket costs for low-income people. This harmful attack on the Affordable Care Act could unravel the insurance markets and drive up insurance premiums dramatically for low and middle-income families.

But there is still hope!

Congress can avert this crisis by providing the necessary funding to continue theses subsidies. Last week, Senators Lamar Alexander and Patty Murray announced a bi-partisan package of so-called “stabilization" measures that would do just that. This legislation does not address all our concerns around access to quality, affordable health care in this nation, but it represents a necessary and constructive first step to address the immediate problems within the individual market.

Our scriptures affirm our moral responsibility to ensure that all live with dignity and the opportunity to recognize their full potential. Access to affordable, quality health care should not be a privilege.

Passage of this bill is far from certain. Your voice is needed. Tell Congress to move quickly to pass strong bipartisan legislation that stabilizes the market and improves health care for America’s families.
