We must act quickly to create real change for Indigenous kids through equitable funding and education that incorporates Indigenous languages, cultures, values and communities in student success.
The current government has made some big promises on reconciliation in education and followed them up with some signs of commitment, including historic levels of budget commitment in early 2016. Parliament has also made valuable commitments to the Truth and Reconciliation Commission Calls to Action starting with the implementation of the UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples.
But the Indigenous education system is still deeply broken. Let’s speak up and urge our MPs to follow through on these promises and good intentions, for the sake of Indigenous kids.
Money is not the whole solution but funding gaps ranging from 30%-50% persist between provincial and First Nations school systems. That’s not okay. Action on funding equity and Indigenous leadership and participation is critical for reconciliation in Indigenous education.
Ask your MP to establish clear steps to address the funding gap and to implement TRC Calls to Action 7-10 so that Indigenous parents can send their kids to schools that integrate their languages, cultures, values, and communities into the educational system.
