Tell the EPA to uphold the goals of the Renewable Fuel Standard (RFS)!

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) recently released a Notice of Data Availability concerning potential further reductions in the 2018 Renewable Volume Obligations (RVOs) for biodiesel, advanced biofuel, and total renewable fuel. The proposal would slash biodiesel volumes for 2018 by as much as 315 million gallons, which could in-turn effectively reduce the proposed volumes of advanced and total renewable biofuels by 473 million gallons.

Biofuels are moving America forward by delivering homegrown fuel that lowers greenhouse gas emissions, supports American jobs, and saves drivers money at the pump. Any reduction in renewable biofuel blending is a step backward for the United States.

I am writing to call on the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to uphold the goals of the Renewable Fuel Standard (RFS) following the agency’s release of a Notice of Data Availability concerning potential further reductions in the 2018 Renewable Volume Obligations (RVOs) for biodiesel, advanced, and total renewable fuel. I sincerely hope that my comments will be considered in your decision.

The EPA has recently proposed reducing the biodiesel volume for 2018 by as much as 315 million gallons. Growth Energy says this would effectively further reduce the proposed volumes of advanced and total renewable biofuels by 473 million gallons.

If we are to continue to reverse decades of greenhouse gas and toxic emissions from fossil fuel consumption, it is imperative that the EPA honor its commitment to preserving our nation’s most successful energy policy. I am alarmed that the EPA looks to be taking steps backward after making so many declarations of support for renewable fuels. Our industry urges the EPA to move forward, not backward on the RFS.

Ethanol is an integral part of our modern transportation fuel mix, and is in more than 97 percent of fuel used today. The current global production and use of ethanol is estimated to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 110 metric tons annually—that’s equivalent to taking nearly 20 million vehicles off the road each year. Furthermore, ethanol is more energy-efficient to produce than conventional gasoline. Additionally, according to an Informa Economics IEG study from August 2017 titled “The Economic Contribution of the U.S. Ethanol Industry and Its Coproducts,” the total impact of ethanol and ethanol coproducts indirectly supported nearly 300,000 jobs across the U.S. and $34.6 billion in GDP in 2016.

As the final rule takes shape, I hope that you will consider the impact that the Notice of Data Availability concerning further reductions in the 2018 RVOs will have on the industry. Ethanol is a fuel for the 21st century: Strong RVOs and a robust RFS are critical to seeing the expansion of this cleaner fuel choice.
