Independent Senior Housing Resident Freedom of Choice Act

Support A.5158 (Cymbrowitz)/S.897 (Young)

The Independent Senior Housing Resident Freedom of Choice Act is vital for seniors residing in senior housing and would clarify that individuals living in senior housing have the right to access and obtain the same services that they would if they were an individual residing in the community, from the provider of their choosing. These services include personal care, home care, case management, technologies, and other community services that support them to live independently in the community.

The Independent Senior Housing Resident Freedom of Choice Act not only would ensure the right of all senior housing residents in New York to choose and employ services from an outside licensed agency, but it would also allow residents to “age in place” in the least restrictive, most independent setting – their own home. In doing so, seniors would be able to maintain a stronger quality of life and avoid costly medical or institutional admissions.
