The Paris Agreement on climate change entered into force in November 2016. This agreement represents a near-global commitment to take action to keep the global temperature rise to well below 2 degrees Celsius and to end global emissions of greenhouse gases by the end of the century. The new Canadian climate framework includes several measures – a modest carbon pricing benchmark, industry regulations, and significant investment in public transportation – that should get them to the established Canadian target to reduce GHG emissions 30 per cent below 2005 levels by 2030.
Estimates of a "fair share" contribution suggest that at a minimum, Canada should align with the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change’s recommended reductions of 25-40 per cent below 1990 levels by 2020. Canada's current target translates to only about 14 per cent below 1990 levels by 2030.

Canadian climate action must respect scientific estimates of the global greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions budget, and contributes equitably towards the 1.5°C limit on global warming aspired to in the Paris Agreement.
Steps that would move us towards these emissions reductions and also promote climate justice include:
committing to continue to increase Canada’s carbon price beyond 2022 so that it reaches at least $160/tonne by 2030.
immediately eliminating subsidies to industrial activities that increase carbon dioxide emissions and investing $12.15 billion in the development of a low-carbon economy over the next five years.
respecting the autonomy of Indigenous peoples over their land, including when making decisions about energy projects.
acknowledging the challenge that fossil fuel projects and infrastructure present to reaching the global temperature goals of the Paris Agreement.
providing retraining for current and laid-off energy workers to retool to work in renewable energy.
increasing international climate financing to Canada’s fair-share contribution of $4 billion each year by 2020.

As an expression of love for God’s awesome creation, tell your MP that you, as a person of faith, want meaningful climate action – consistent with the principles of the Paris Agreement – to reduce GHG emissions and address climate change.
