Now is the time to pass commonsense legislation that would allow federal agencies to research gun violence and firearm injury prevention.

As the voice of more than 3.6 million registered nurses across the United States, ANA has consistently asked lawmakers to take strong action against the growing trend of gun violence in America, including banning assault weapons, enhancing background check systems, enacting mandatory waiting periods, and combatting the epidemic as a public health and safety issues.

It's critical that lawmakers take the next logical step and encourage research to develop meaningful, evidence-based prevention strategies that would be essential to ending gun violence.

Please support HR 1478 and allow gun violence research

Dear Representative,

As your constituent and a member of the American Nurses Association (ANA), I strongly encourage you to actively support H.R. 1478, the Gun Violence Research Act. This legislation would repeal a provision in federal law that essentially prohibits the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and all other agencies within the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) from researching gun violence and firearm injury prevention and provide appropriate funding to examine the causes and prevention strategies for gun violence.

In recent years, our country has endured unspeakable acts of violence. Easy access to guns is the common thread in each of these mass-casualty tragedies. At an alarming rate, registered nurses, in emergency departments and clinics across the country, are being called upon to care for victims of mass shootings, homicides, suicides, and accidental shootings.

ANA believes that research to develop meaningful, evidence-based prevention strategies is critical to ending gun violence.
