Tell D.C. Lawmakers: Protect the Great Lakes

Right now, Congress is making decisions about the federal budget that will have serious consequences for the Great Lakes and the millions of people that rely on them.

First, the good news. The budget bill currently under consideration by the House of Representatives includes full funding for the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative (GLRI). And, that’s thanks to hard work by lawmakers around the Great Lakes region.

But, just protecting the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative isn’t enough. While the GLRI is an important piece of the puzzle, it’s going to take a lot more to ensure our water is safe, clean and accessible. And, that means providing funding to fix our nation’s failing water infrastructure, to maintain a robust U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, and to ensure all communities have access to safe, affordable drinking water. That also means keeping the federal budget free of add-ons that strip away existing environmental protections.

Tell lawmakers to protect our clean water and Great Lakes by supporting—and funding—the priority measures outlined in our 2017 Great Lakes Action Agenda.

Our Great Lakes Action Agenda calls on Congress to:

  • Ensure Access to Safe, Affordable Drinking Water
  • Invest to Improve Outdated and Failing Drinking and Wastewater Infrastructure
  • Fund the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative
  • Preserve the Clean Water Act and U.S. Environmental Protection Agency
  • Support Existing Invasive Species Regulations
  • Prevent Asian Carp from Reaching the Great Lakes
