President Trump’s nominee for the open seat on the U.S. Supreme Court, Judge Neil Gorsuch, is wrong on religious freedom and wrong for the Supreme Court. Urge your Senators to oppose his confirmation.
Religious freedom gives us the right to believe or not as we see fit, but it does not give us the right to use our beliefs to harm or discriminate against others. In the now-infamous Hobby Lobby case, Gorsuch, as a federal appeals court judge, sided with corporations, saying that businesses should get a religious exemption from the Affordable Care Act’s rule requiring their health insurance plans to cover contraception. And by siding with corporations, he allowed them to use religion as an excuse to harm women and deny them access to health care.
True religious freedom, of course, also means that the government cannot promote or endorse religion. But as a federal appeals court judge, Gorsuch supported allowing government-sponsored religious displays.
The next Supreme Court justice should uphold church-state separation because it is the foundation of religious freedom. Gorsuch’s record shows he’s only likely to weaken this fundamental principle. Now is the time to urge your Senators to oppose his confirmation.
