The Senate has scheduled a hearing on the nomination of Betsy DeVos for Secretary of Education for January 17. DeVos should not be the head of the Department of Education. Aside from the fact that she has absolutely no experience with the public education system, DeVos has led the crusade, in states across the country, to create taxpayer-funded private school voucher programs – programs that undermine public schools.
Trump’s already said he plans to push for a $20 billion nationwide private school voucher program, and now he’s picked DeVos to help fight for his outrageous proposal.
Private school vouchers divert desperately needed resources away from the public school system to fund the education of just a few voucher students. Diverting $20 billion could have a devastating impact. And that’s not all—voucher programs have proven ineffective, lack accountability to taxpayers, deprive students of rights provided to public school students, and threaten the freedom of religion and belief.
Now is the time to act! AU's Legislative team has already submitted questions to the Senate committee that will hold a hearing to examine DeVos’s record. And we need you to tell the Chair and Ranking Member of the committee, Senator Lamar Alexander (R-TN) and Senator Patty Murray (D-WA), that you oppose her nomination and urge them to press her about her record of supporting private school vouchers. Join us—together we’ll fight against her nomination.
