If the budget is a moral document, we have lost our way.

Last week President Trump released his 2018 budget proposal, a plan that fundamentally alters our commitment to each other and the common good. The $4.1 trillion budget plan would cut deeply into programs for the poor - from health care and food stamps to student loans and disability payments - and lays out a cruel and austere vision for reordering the nation’s priorities.

And what do we get in exchange?

Massive tax cuts that will primarily benefit wealthy households and corporations, increased spending on the military and more money for deportations and border enforcement.

People who care about the common good and the millions of their neighbors who have been shut out of the American Dream should be outraged by the severe cuts to key social programs and protections.

Scripture tells us that we as Christian individuals – and as a nation – we are called to do what is just. These proposed budget cuts are more than just dollars and cents on a ledger sheet. They represent real lives, real suffering and real lost potential in our communities.

Congress has the power to write our nation’s budget. They can choose to implement the President’s vision, or to go a different way. The House is already working, in an attempt to pass a version of their budget before the August Recess. Now is the time to speak out!

Act now – urge your legislators to work for a fair budget in 2018!
